James Lewis Copley

LEXINGTON — James Lewis Copley, 58, Hamilton Road, died Friday (March 31, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an 18-month fight with cancer.

Born Sept. 21, 1941, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Walter Lewis and Celia Ellenburg Copley. A graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury and East Carolina University, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a vice president with Bank of America, where he was employed for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Shoaf Copley; sons James Luke Copley, Winston-Salem, Matthew Garland Copley, Thomasville, John Mark Copley, Wilmington, and David Lewis Copley, Lexington; brothers Bob and Steve Copley, both of Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. today, First Alliance Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Barbazette. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: The family will be at the home.

Memorials: First Alliance Church Building Fund, 424 E. Ninth St., Lexington, N.C. 27295.

 

Lillian F. Correll

GOLD HILL — Lillian Fesperman Correll, 62, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 20, 1936, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Grace Deal Fesperman. She was educated in Rowan County Schools and worked for Thor-Lo Manufacturing in Rockwell. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Her husband, James Edward Correll, died on Feb. 4, 2000.

Survivors include a stepson, James Edward Correll II, Gold Hill; stepdaughters Diane C. Kluttz, Mount Pleasant, Tonia Helms, Gold Hill, and Starlet Holder, Olivia; a brother, George Fesperman, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Powles Funeral Home.

Malinda Hampton Hearne

ALBEMARLE — Malinda Hampton Hearne, 89, 331 Center St. died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 23, 1910, in Laurens County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Lex Smith and Cynthia Miller Clardy. She was educated in the Laurens County public schools and was a retired domestic worker.

Mrs. Hearne belonged to Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society, Church’s Aid and Pastor’s Aid.

Husbands Perry Hampton and Robert A. Hearne preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons James Hampton, Farrockaway, N.Y., and Robert A. Hearne Jr., Albemarle; daughters Perry L. Harris, Judith H. Rush and Dorinda C. Hearne, all of Albemarle, Carolyn Townsend, Norfolk, Conn., Linda A. Wilson, Wilmington, and Mary Snuggs, Norwood; a sister, Sallie Jane Leggett, Albemarle; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, conducted by the Rev. James T. Worthy, at East Side Cemetery. Kelsey Funeral Home was in charge.

 

Patricia Cole Hooker

ALBEMARLE — Patricia Cole Hooker, 48, 270 N. Beacon St., Brighton, Mass., died Monday (March 27, 2000) at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Born Sept. 10, 1951, in Anson County, she was a daughter of the late Gennie B. Cole. She was educated in Albemarle (N.C.) City Schools and Roxbury Community in Massachusetts.

Mrs. Hooker was an employee of MBTA, a public transportation system. She was a former member of Union Chapel AME Zion and attended Church of God in Christ in Roxbury, Mass.

Survivors include her husband, George W. Hooker Jr.; a son, George W. Hooker III, Boston; foster sons Darvon Cole, Michael Perkins, Da-Shawn Cole and Curtis Page, all of Baltimore, Md.; daughters Stephanie A. Cole and Shelia L. Hooker, both of Boston; a foster daughter, Gidget Williams, Boston; brothers Sammy K. Cole, and William Smith, both of Boston, Ollie Smith and Frankie Cole, both of Albemarle, Sylvester Smith, Baltimore; sisters Dicye B. Grambling, Johnnie M. Jones, Carol Cole and Velvet Cole, all of Albemarle, Mamie C. Atkins, New London; Diane C. Allen, Jean Smith, Linda Smith and Marylin Smith, all of Boston; and 13 grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Saints Delight Church, Albemarle, conducted by Dr. James E. Richardson, pastor. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory. Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Kathleen Huffines

The funeral will be Tuesday for Kathleen Dabbs Beaver Huffines, 86, 1505 Bringle Ferry Road and formerly of West 11th Street, Spencer, who died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury. She had been in declining health for three years.

Born Nov. 6, 1913, in Union County, she was a daughter of the late J.A. and Hattie Jane Smith Dabbs. Mrs. Huffines was educated in the Cabarrus County Schools, the Farm Life School in China Grove and Rockwell High School. She worked for Cannon Mills until her retirement in 1972.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Spencer, where she belonged to the Dorcus Bible Sunday School Class, Ollie Crowell Circle and WELCA. She was a charter member of Eastern Star Chapter 277 and served in several offices and as a worthy matron. She was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member.

Her first husband, Lewis A. Beaver, preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1955, and her second husband, Carl Miller Huffines, died Jan. 16, 1987.

Survivors include a son, Norman A. Beaver, Bahama; daughters Betty Beaver Ratchford and Vickie Beaver Park, both of Blackstock, S.C.; a brother, Howard J. Dabbs, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Calvary Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Kraft, minister. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Berkley Jones Jr.

MOCKSVILLE — Berkley Jones Jr., 67, 80 Marconi St., died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Scarborough & Hargett Memorial Chapel, 306 S. Roxboro St., Durham, N.C. 27701.

 

Clifford G. Lefler Jr.

ROCKWELL — Clifford Grady Lefler Jr., 71, 5510 Highway 152 East, died Monday (March 27, 2000) at Genesis Care, Salisbury.

Born Sept. 18, 1928, in the Kannapolis portion of Rowan County, he was a son of the late Clifford G. Lefler Sr. and Anna Abernathy Lefler.

Mr. Lefler belonged to Grace Bible Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force for 26 years at the command level at SAC, TAC and PAC. He then worked for the U.S. government for 12 years.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Lefler belonged to the Rod and Gun Club of Salisbury.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice McCorkle Lefler; daughters Glenna Gideon, Olympia, Wash., and Dawn Shuping, Gastonia; a sister, Hallie Fink, Kannapolis; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Alan Misenheimer. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. Graveside military rites by the U.S. Air Force.

Visitation: 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.
