Martha Winecoff Atwell

DAVIDSON — Martha Winecoff Atwell, 84, 11135 Mooresville Road, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at her residence.

She was the mother of James W. Atwell Jr., Lexington.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Gilwood Presbyterian Church, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Jay Rabuck and the Rev. Samuel Pierce. Burial, Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery, Davidson.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Gilwood Presbyterian Church.

Gladys Ethel Owens Byrd

LEXINGTON — Gladys Ethel Owens Byrd, 86, 355 Mount Carmel Road, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 4, 1913, in Clairborn County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Cordie Gibbons and John W. Owens. She had retired after 30 years with Erlanger Mills and Wynoia Mills.

She was a member of Christ Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and the Carrie Clayton Bible School Class.

Survivors include sons Carl W. Byrd, Mauldin, S.C. and Gary M. Byrd, Mechanicsville, Va.; daughter Doris Heitman, Lexington; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Christ Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roger Weisner, the Rev. Pastor Clyde Akers and the Rev. Bruce Langley. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Joyce Barger Canup

Joyce Marlene Barger Canup, 48, Salisbury, died Friday (March 31, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after four years of declining health.

Born April 16, 1951, in Rowan County, Mrs. Canup was a daughter of Mary Gibson and Craig Barger, both of Faith. A 1969 graduate of East Rowan High School, she worked at Fieldcrest Cannon, Plant 1, sewing department. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for 25 years.

Survivors include husband Thomas Wayne Canup, whom she married in June 1974; son Thomas Wayne Canup Jr., of the home; stepdaughters Rebecca Marlene Canup, of the home, and Lisa Canup Tadlock, China Grove; brother Michael C. Barger, Faith; and a grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland and the Rev. Judy Copeland, pastors. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home of his brother in Faith.

 

James Allen Ewing

KANNAPOLIS — James Allen Ewing, 76, Britthaven of Kannapolis, formerly of First Assembly Living Center, Concord, died Friday (March 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after five years of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born April 7, 1923, in Concord, Mr. Ewing was a son of the late Frances Perry and William Ewing. Retired from Crystal Springs Water Co. in Miami, Fla., he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include son Jim Ewing, Concord; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Services: Graveside service, Sunday, 3 p.m. Kannapolis Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Steve Autrey.

Visitation: 2-2:45 Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will bea the home of son Jim Ewing, 229 Kings Creek Court, Concord.

Clifton James Herrin

ALBEMARLE — Clifton James Herrin, 84, 711 Aquadale Road, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at his residence.

Born Jan. 10, 1916, in Stanly County, Mr. Herrin was a son of the late Luther and Jane Furr Herrin. A retired heavy equipment owner and operator, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Herrin was a member of Canton Baptist Church.

Mr. Herrin was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Virginia Austin Herrin, and a son, Donnie Herrin.

Survivors include his wife Maynolia Smith Herrin; son Conrad Youvon Herrin, Holly Hill, S.C.; daughter Jahaliah Cook, Albemarle; stepdaughter Jenelle S. Faulkner, Albemarle; sisters Delsie Lambert, Albemarle, and Rose Poplin, Lake Norman; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Hunsucker.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Jahaliah Cook, 1196 Carolyn Drive, Albemarle.

Ray Michael Hill

MIDWAY — Ray Michael Hill, 78, Ridge Road, died Friday (March 31, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital, Lexington.

Born May 18, 1921, in Davidson County, Mr. Hill was a son of Lillie Elizabeth Sowers Hill, Lexington, and the late Elmer C. Hill. He had retired as a farmer and a member of the Midway Fire Department. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Midway United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his first wife, Faith Elizabeth Hine Hill.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Pergie Catherine Nations Hill; son Ray Michael Hill Jr.; daughters Barbara Ellen Nifong, Lexington, and Nancy Elizabeth Gibbons, Woodleaf; stepdaughters Penny Moose and Susan Kepley, both of Lexington; brothers Glenn and Bruce Hill, both of Lexington; sisters Mary Tesh and Edna Snider, both of Lexington; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Midway United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harry Sellers Jr. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel.

 

Myrtle Moore Hudson

KANNAPOLIS — Myrtle Moore Hudson, 78, 730 Baker St., died Friday (March 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several months of declining health.

Born June 8, 1921, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Hudson was a daughter of the late Kezzie Williams and Zachariah Moore. She was owner and operator, along with her late husband, John W. Hudson, of the former Modern Cleaners and Speed Queen Laundromat. She was a member of the TOPS Club of Concord.

Survivors include sons Robert L. Hudson, Newton, David A. Hudson, Charlotte, and Eric Hudson, Kannapolis; sister Mary Frances Beaver, Rock Hill, S.C. ; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Todd Posey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

SPENCER — Kathleen Dabbs Beaver Huffines, formerly of 11th Street, died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

Robert ‘Bob’ Klock

The funeral will be Monday for Robert “Bob” Nicholas Klock, 79, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Baltimore, Mr. Klock was a son of the late William and Anne Church Klock. He was educated in the Fort Thomas, Ky., schools.

Mr. Klock served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a medical corpsman during World War II. Retired as a cabinetmaker, he drove a truck for various small businesses in Cincinnati in his later life.

He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and Mount Washington American Legion, both in Cincinnati, and the Rockwell AMVETS.

Survivors include wife Lilly Cain Klock; son Robert John Klock, Norwood, Ohio; daughter Carol Helen Miller, Pleasant Ridge, Ohio; stepson Robert Ray Cain, Somerset, Ky.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services: Mass of Resurrection, 11 a.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements, pastor.

Visitation: None.

Lottie Ann Mack Krider

CHARLOTTE — Lottie Ann Mack Krider, 61, 1424 Squirrel Hill Road, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at University Medical Hospital, Charlotte.

Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Doris Tysinger Marshburn

LEXINGTON — Doris Ann Tysinger Marshburn, 54, 207 Sink Inn Road, died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 19, 1945, in Randolph County, she was a daughter of Pauline Barbara Tysinger, Lexington, and the late Hube Hedrick Tysinger. She was employed with Centerclair Nursing Home and the Lexington Dispatch as long as her health permitted.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include daughters Lisa Willilams and Paul Adams, both of Lexington; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Hepler. Burial, Summerville Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Lisa Williams, 289 Lorie Belle Lane.

Memorials can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

LOCUST — Mildred Morgan Treece, 1216 W. Main St., died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at the home of daughter Mrs. Mark (Carolyn) Corriher, Mocksville.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Kenny Wallace and the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster. Burial, church cemetery.
